Alerts

"Tell me when..." - an alert watches a counter and tells the people on a notify list when its rule is met.

An alert watches a counter for you. When its rule is met, it tells the people and addresses on its notify list.

#What an alert can watch for

  • A line crossed - "tell me when any table passes 80% used".
  • Silence - "tell me when nothing has arrived for a day". Useful for spotting a job that's stopped, or a tap link nobody's using.
  • Whatever the rule says - "tell me when more than 5 incidents are open".

#Set one up

  1. Open the counter and start a new alert.
  2. Say when. Describe it in a sentence, starting "Tell me when...".
  3. Check it against real rows. Before it's saved, the rule is tried on the counter's actual data - so you see whether it would fire now, and why.
  4. Add the notify list. The people and addresses to tell.
  5. Save.

Tip: pair a "line crossed" alert with a "silence" alert on the same counter. The first tells you about the number; the second tells you if the number stopped arriving.
